Der Hurrikan "Dean" bewegt sich auf die Küste Zentralamerikas (Belize, Yukatan-Halbinsel) zu.
Die derzeitige Zerstörungskraft dürfte nach Einschätzung des National Hurrican Centers (US) die des Hurrikans "Katrina", der New Orleans zerstört hatte, übertreffen.

Zwischenzeitlich ist Hurrikan Dean in Yukatan eingeschlagen:

Die Zerstörungskraft dieses Hurrikans läßt sich nur noch mit einem Flächenbombardement vergleichen.

Die Stadt Chetumal im Süden der Halbinsel Yukatan (Provinz Qiuntana Roo) trägt schwerste Zerstörungen davon. Tote gab es glücklicherweise bislang noch nicht. In Belize gibt es im nördlichen Teil des Landes ebenfalls allerschwerste Verwüstungen.
Das von der Naturgewalt insgesamt betroffene Gebiet umfasst etwa 800 qkm.

die hurricane-saison scheint heuer früher als "normal" zu starten... 'mal schauen, wie sich die die situation mit blick auf die karibik entwickelt - im moment scheint noch keine gefahr zu herrschen:

Naja, es sieht zwar gut aus, aber erfreulich ist das, was Dean hinterlasen hat, nicht. Gleichwohl: es hätte schlimmer kommen können.

Hier die neuesten Nachrichten von Belize National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO):

NEMO BULLETIN #6-HURRICANE DEAN

BELMOPAN, 20th August 2007, 8:15 PM - NEMO hereby advises the public not to be fooled by the apparent calm which occurs when the eye of the hurricane passes over Belize. Please monitor your radio for the official ALL CLEAR before venturing out from your shelter or home.

NEMO advises the general public that the curfew has been extended up to 9 p.m. tonight to accommodate people seeking safe shelter only for residents in Belize City.

NEMO reminds the general public that the sale of alcohol is absolutely prohibited during this emergency. The consumption of alcohol in public places is also prohibited especially in designated shelters.

At 6:00 p.m. local time, the center of Hurricane Dean continues to move west ward near 20 mph. Hurricane Dean was located near latitude 18.2 N….85.1 W or about 209 miles east North east of Belize City, 189 miles east by North of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye and 216 miles east of Corozal Town. On this track, Dean is expected to make land fall over the Yucatan Peninsula very early Tuesday. The southern eye-wall is expected to be over extreme northern Belize when hurricane Dean makes landfall over the Yucatan peninsula. Hurricane Dean is an extremely dangerous hurricane and has strengthened to a Category Five hurricane with winds of 160 miles per hour. The Government of Belize has extended the Hurricane warning to the entire coast of Belize.

Conditions are already deteriorating over Belize. North to North Westerly winds are expected to increase to hurricane strength in the north tonight producing very rough seas along with large swells. Wave height will increase to about 9 – 14 feet. We will get continuous rain tonight with embedded showers and thunderstorms. Rain could cause flashfloods and flooding.

NEMO BULLETIN #7-HURRICANE DEAN

Belmopan, 21st August 2007- NEMO advises residents of San Pedro, Ambergris and Belize City that the curfew has been lifted. The police will maintain anti looting patrols in all affected areas to ensure the safety and security of the citizenry and property.

Those persons who are in shelters should remain there until NEMO advises that it will be safe to return home. Transportation will be provided for those persons who are in shelters outside of Belize City when such advice is given.

A search and rescue reconnaissance sweep will be conducted this afternoon over affected areas to determine the extent of the damage caused by Hurricane Dean countrywide.

TUESDAY, 21ST AUGUST 2007:
Dear Friends;
The Prime Minister, in his capacity as Chairman of the
National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), through NEMO's
Coordinator retired Lt.Col. George Lovell Sr. has, as of 12:20 p.m. today,
officially issued the ALL CLEAR declaration for all of Belize in the wake of
Hurricane Dean.
Technical teams have subsequently been dispatched to San Pedro Town as
well as to the Orange Walk and Corozal Districts which are believed to be
most affected by the hurricane.
With the ALL CLEAR declaration, the situation has therefore reverted to
normal as employees are preparing to return to work.
In Belize City and the northern towns of Orange Walk and Corozal, the
respective town councils are now engaged mostly in the clearing of fallen
trees in their respective municipalities.
Although there has been no report of loss of life or major displacement of
persons, the Minister of NEMO has nevertheless announced the deployment of
Search and Rescue teams.(search for whom and rescue whom, probably only the
minister knows)
The Mayor of Orange Walk town is reporting minimal damages in that
municipality. In the meantime NEMO's Orange Walk coordinator Netty Johnson
confirmed that there are no casualties in the Orange Walk District. Johnson
reported that over 2,200 persons were accommodated in town shelters and
another 1,000 in village shelters throughout the 26 villages in the
district.
According to Johnson, NEMO Orange Walk is now engaged in damage assessment
and needs analysis particularly in the villages of Douglas and Santa Martha
as well as assisting those few residents whose homes were demolished in the
wake to Hurricane Dean.
According to Netty Johnson, NEMO Orange Walk is now preparing to deal
with flooding conditions that could follow in the villages of Douglas and
San Antonio on the banks to the Rio Hondo River which flows out of
neighbouring Mexico.
In terms of the San Pedro scenario, after sustaining almost 6 hours of
strong winds, no major damage was reported, according to San Pedro's NEMO
Coordinator James Mohammed.
As in Orange Walk, several streets in San Pedro were blocked by fallen
trees. Mohammed reports that a few local power lines were down. The major
damage in San Pedro comes, according to Mohammed, by way of extensive
damages to about 85% of the town's piers with whole sections of piers flung
on beaches in several areas of the town.
Mohammed further reports minimal damages to dwelling places in the
community. He said that Caye Caulker emerged in a better position than San
Pedro Town as there is very little damages to piers in Caye Caulker.
Mohammed reports no loss of life in the area.
San Pedro is currently without electricity and therefore the community
sewer, which requires electricity to pump the sewer from station to station,
is not working. San Pedro NEMO is therefore requesting the gradual return
of evacuees while power is being restored.
According to Mohammed, it should take no more a few weeks for life in San
Pedro to fully return to normal.
Thus far no official word out of the northernmost District of Corozal
which is believed to have been the hardest hit community.
