The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science (HSSEAS) at UCLA ) is proud to announce its newly approved Master of Science (M.S.) degree, with the diploma designation “Master of Science in Engineering”, to be delivered OnLine. The primary purpose of this new Program is to enable employed engineers and computer scientists to enhance their technical education beyond the Baccalaureate level and to enhance their value to the technical organizations in which they are employed. The training and education that the proposed Master of Science in Engineering Program offers are of significant importance and usefulness to engineers, their employers, and to California and the nation. It is at the M.S. level that the engineer has the opportunity to learn a specialization in depth. It is at the M.S. level that those engineers with advanced degrees may also renew and update their knowledge of the technology advances that occur, and have been occurring, at a rapid rate. This Master of Science program is addressed to those highly-qualified employed engineers who, for various reasons, do not attend the on-campus M.S. programs, and who are keenly interested in maintaining up-to-date knowledge of “cutting-edge” engineering and technology. The Distinctive Features of this Program are: Each course is fully equivalent to the corresponding on-campus course; only the mode of delivery is different. Each course is taught by the faculty members who teach the on-campus course. The OnLine lectures are not mere videos of on-campus lectures; rather, they are separately and carefully prepared for the OnLine student. The Master of Science in Engineering degree allows for combinations of courses in different departments and thereby for multidisciplinary emphases. When an area-of-study is within a department of the School, an additional certificate will be issued stating the nature of the equivalence to that department’s Master of Science degree. The Program is to be delivered by electronic means. Students of the Program will receive all course materials, including lectures, in an “on-line” manner. The current mode of delivering many courses within HSSEAS already relies heavily upon electronic means, using the School’s full service WEB interface, known as “CourseWeb.” -http://msengrol.seas.ucla.edu/index.html

About the Program
The Program consists of 9 courses: 8 at the 100/200 level, with at least 5 at the 200 level; and one directed study course (numbered 597A). The latter course serves to satisfy the University of California requirement for a capstone event (in the on-campus program the requirement is covered by a comprehensive examination or a thesis); this directed study course consists of an engineering design project and is far better suited for the working engineer/computer scientist. The Program’s requirements are all contained within the 9 course requirement. The Master of Science in Engineering OnLine Program will be structured in a manner that will allow employed engineers/computer scientists to complete the requirements at a “part-time” pace (e.g., one 100/200 level course per quarter for several quarters). However, the total time to complete the program will be at most two academic years plus one additional summer quarter. The program allows employed engineers and computer scientists to continue their technical education while being employed. The program is "self-supporting"; that is, state funds are not allocated for the program's operation. The fee for a 9-course program is $30,000. -http://msengrol.seas.ucla.edu/index.html
