What is a Specialised Diploma?

A Specialised Diploma is a new qualification aimed at providing young people between the ages of 14-19, with the skills and knowledge they need to gain a job in UK industry.

There will be 14 Specialised Diplomas, launching across schools in England from 2008, covering broad subject areas as diverse as retail, manufacturing, hair and beauty and media. These qualifications will run in parallel with the traditional GCSE/A-Level and Apprenticeship routes and will consist of a new formula of blended learning – combining vocational on-the-job training with traditional academic study. The Manufacturing Diploma will roll out in schools from 2009.

Each qualification will provide young people with the practical skills and the theoretical and technical knowledge they require to progress into employment, training or further and higher education.
What makes the Diploma special?

Diplomas are unique because:

* Employers and wider industry have been placed at the forefront of the design and development of the Specialised Diploma content and structure. This provides learners with the skills and knowledge identified as most required by employers.
* The qualification also consists of a more flexible style of learning combining academic study with opportunities to practice skills.
* The Diploma will appeal to young people who wish to stay in full-time education but want to gain some real experience of employment before deciding on a career.
* Finally, the qualification does not limit the future progression of students. They can move into Further or Higher Education, Employment or an Apprenticeship in one of the Manufacturing sub-sectors.

The Manufacturing Diploma

The 14-19 Specialised Diploma in Manufacturing will launch in 2009. The Manufacturing Diploma will offer students the chance to gain a real understanding of the practical skills and knowledge required to work in the Manufacturing sectors in the UK.

Who is the Manufacturing Diploma for?

The Manufacturing Diploma is for all 14-19 year old students who want to get a broad understanding of the manufacturing sub-sectors. The Diploma will provide the basic knowledge for all students wishing to gain an understanding of manufacturing practices and processes, whilst also offering the opportunity for the application of technical skills in a real work environment.

What does the Manufacturing Diploma cover?

The Manufacturing Diploma covers the following manufacturing sub-sectors:

* Paint, coatings and inks
* Building products, bricks, paving etc
* Printing
* Extraction, mining and quarrying
* Glass manufacturing
* Glazing
* Ceramics and pottery
* Furniture
* Man-made fibres
* Leather manufacturing
* Technical textiles
* Laundry and dry cleaning
* Footwear, apparel and leather goods
* Bakery
* Meat and Poultry
* Food and Drink Manufacturing
* Chemicals
* Refineries

* Brewing and Distilling
* Process manufacturing
* Oil and gas
* Polymer
* Nuclear
* Metal productions
* Electronics
* Machinery equipment
* Automotive
* Marine
* Aerospace
* Other transport
* Rubber tyres
* Basic metals
* Whole metals
* Ores
* Waste and Scrap

Dependent on the level of Diploma you are studying it may be possible to specialise in one, or more of these areas.

Diploma Structure and Content

Each of the new Specialised Diplomas is available at three levels (1-3) and contains three key areas of learning. This page will help you understand the different learning components making up the Diploma and what is studied at each level of qualification:

3 Levels of Specialised Diploma

There are three levels of Diploma which can be studied between the ages of 14 and 19. The three levels do not need to be taken in sequence; indeed a student can join the Diploma programme at level 2 for example. However, the Diplomas are structured to allow ease of progression from one level to the next.

* At Level 1, there is a generic Manufacturing Diploma that provides students with the opportunity to explore the full range of manufacturing sub-sectors. Students will benefit from an introduction to the manufacturing sub-sectors with the emphasis on building basic skills in terms of industry knowledge and the application of practical skills generic to manufacturing. The Level 1 Diploma is roughly equivalent to four to five GCSEs (grades A*-C).
* The purpose of the Manufacturing Diploma at Level 2 is to encourage students to further explore a range of practical skills and to develop a broad underpinning knowledge of manufacturing practices and processes. The student will gain experience in a wide range of transferable skills such as critical thinking and problem solving. The student will also develop basic practical skills to apply their learning. The Level 2 Diploma is roughly comparable to five or six GCSEs.
* The Manufacturing Diploma at Level 3 will allow students to refine their skills and knowledge by offering an opportunity to specialise and explore fewer sectors at a deeper level. The content will remain broad with links across manufacturing sectors to allow progression at Level 4 into employment, further HE/FE education or on to an Apprenticeship. The Level 3 Diploma is roughly comparable to two A-Levels.

3 types of learning

The 14-19 Specialised Diplomas will have three key areas of learning:

* Principal Learning – this is sector-specific learning. For example with the Manufacturing Diploma students will develop knowledge, understanding and the skills relevant to the manufacturing sub-sectors. They will also be given opportunities to apply these skills to work based roles or situations.
* Specialist Learning – Students will be able to choose from a range of learning options selected by employers as being beneficial to working in the different manufacturing industry. This could cover areas such as health and safety or quality assurance.
* Generic Learning – All students taking part on a Diploma will still study core subjects including English, Maths, Science and ICT, PE and citizenship.

The Diploma will also include a minimum of ten days work experience at each level.
