Standard Institute of Educational Technology (IET)

Institute of Educational Technology (IET)

Postgraduate Research

We believe postgraduate students are essential to a thriving research community. Conversely, IET provides a stimulating environment for full-time PhD research study, particularly in the areas of teaching and learning with technologies, online and distance learning, and Higher Education policy and practice. The work of our internationally-renowned team of researchers has been highly rated in the last three national Research Assessment Exercises (1992, 1996 and 2001).

It is possible to study for a Ph D or Ed.D.

PhD - four-year full-time doctoral programme

In line with the Economic and Social Sciences Research Funding Council's most recent policy, this innovative programme provides the benefit of four years training for full-time students, where many doctoral programmes only provide three years' funding. You spend your first year studying the MRes, which provides a solid foundation in research methods, allowing you to gain experience of independent research and to develop those skills needed to organise a large amount of material and information, an ideal base from which to continue your doctoral studies for a further three years. Find out more about PhD study.

MRes (Educational Technology)

The MRes provides training to an advanced level in a range of social research methods. It is particularly relevant to students who intend to go on to study for a PhD, but will also be of value to those wanting to work in an environment where research forms a significant part of the work. The MRes is designed to comply with the training requirements specified by the Economic and Social Research Council. It is interdisciplinary in nature and seeks to enhance knowledge and skills that are increasingly demanded in the labour market. Find out more about the MRes.
MSc (Research Methods for Educational Technology)

The OU also offers a part-time distance MSc in Research Methods for Educational Technology, which is designed to give graduates a solid foundation in research methods, both qualitative and quantitative. The degree is recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as suitable preparation for postgraduate research.

There are currently around 15 doctoral students based in IET. For further information on studying for a PhD in IET, or an Ed.D.please see CREET's Postgraduate Research pages.

MRes (Education) and MRes (Educational Technology)

The MRes provides training to an advanced level in a range of social research methods. It is particularly relevant to students who intend to go on to study for a PhD, but will also be of value to those wanting to work in an environment where research forms a significant part of the work. The MRes is designed to comply with the training requirements specified by the Economic and Social Research Council. It is interdisciplinary in nature and seeks to enhance knowledge and skills that are increasingly demanded in the labour market.

The skills that the programme aims to equip students to be able to develop include the following:

* recognize and develop good research problems;
* carry out a literature review
* understand the relevance of and be able to apply a range of both quantitative and qualitative research methods;
* critically analyse and evaluate one’s own research findings and those of others;
* demonstrate awareness and sensitivity to ethical issues and the requirements of the data protection act;
* write clearly and in a style appropriate to purpose;
* construct coherent arguments and articulate ideas clearly to a range of audiences.
* demonstrate original, independent and critical thinking;

The MRes programme consists of five modules that all students must complete

* Module A : An Introduction to Social Research
* At least one module in qualitative research methods, either Module B1: Qualitative research methods or Module B2: Advanced Qualitative Methods
* Module C1: Quantitative research methods - this module is a prerequisite for Module C2:Advanced Statistical Method
* Module D: Dissertation

Students take 5 modules altogether, including the dissertation. All students must take modules A, B1, C1 and D: i.e. the Introductory module (A), a qualitative and quantitative research methods module (B1 and C1); and the Dissertation module (D). CREET students, taking the MRes (Educational Technology) designation or the MRes (Education) designation will need to take an additional module: either a second qualitative research method module or module 5, Advanced Statistical Methods. This decision should be made in conjunction with their supervisors. Note however, that it is not possible to take Advanced Statistical Methods without first having successfully completed Introduction to Survey Research and Statistics.

The core materials for the MRes are drawn from existing Open University courses Educational research methods (E835); Introduction to research: basic skills ans survey methods (DT840); Advanced experimantal design and analysis (D841); Discourse Analysis (D843); and Ethnography (D844). In addition, students make use of the resources and workshops provided by the non-assessed module U501 Doing postgraduate research .

MScRMET - Masters in Research Methods for Educational Technology PART TIME ONLY

Like the MRes this postgraduate research degree equips students with skills that are widely applicable in a wide range of occupational settings, such as education, local government, and sectors of the economy that require knowledge and experience of research methods and data handling. It is also approved as suitable training for doctoral studies. Unlike the MRes which is only available for full time study, the MScRMET can only be studied part-time, at a distance.

Studying for your PhD with CREET - what is it like?

CREET offers a full-time, four-year on-campus doctoral programme (we do not currently offer studentship funding for part-time PhD study). The first year of your doctoral programme will normally* be spent studying a full-time Masters in research methods. This first year degree course is designed to make you familiar with a range of research methodologies, to develop those skills needed to gain experience of independent research and to give you practice in the academic writing skills that are an essential part of doctoral work. At the end of the year you will have undertaken a pilot research project and have developed and refined a research proposal.

In the second and third years of your doctoral studies, you will be carrying out the proposed research, evaluating its success, carrying out any additional studies needed, writing reports on your work and presenting your research at conferences. In your fourth year you will be busy preparing and writing up your thesis, an academic dissertation on the research you have undertaken, ready for submission for examination. This examination is an oral one. Over the course of your studies you will have built up a portfolio of skills and in this fourth year you will also be thinking of your future and preparing for the next steps in your career path.

* If you already hold an ESRC-approved masters in research methods, you can expect to enter the doctoral programme at second year level.

What entry qualifications do I need to study for a CREET PhD?

Candidates are normally required to have a first class or upper-second class degree in a subject such as psychology, education, computing, maths, social science, applied linguistics, language studies or information technology. Previous postgraduate research experience or professional qualifications are also taken into account.

How much will it cost me to study for a PhD?

If your application for full-time study is successful we pay you. CREET offers four-year funded studentships to successful applicants. Studentship funding comprises all tuition fees and a maintenance grant to cover living costs and accommodation, for each of the four years. Applicants can also seek ESRC studentships.

Can I expect funding to attend conferences and seminars?

Yes, CREET encourages all full-time postgraduate research students to attend and present papers at national conferences, seminars and workshops. In addition, your supervisors will encourage you to prepare a research paper to present, probably in your second or third year, at an appropriate major international overseas conference.

What facilities can I expect from CREET?

Our policy in CREET is to provide students with a supportive research environment that will facilitate the submission of a well-prepared thesis within the four-year funded period. CREET students can expect office accommodation and facilities, plus a computer, to be allocated to them and ready at the outset of their studentship. The facilities offered include a desk, telephone, storage space, free stationery, photocopying and access to a range of on-line library services. You would expect to share an office with your year's cohort and you will be allocated a second or third-year student who will act as a 'buddy', i.e. show you the ropes and answer the many questions you are bound to have at the outset of your studies.

What are the benefits of studying with CREET?

Susan Moron-Garcia

"There's lots of support and enthusiasm here. The facilities are great: we were impressed by the office accommodation, computers set up and waiting, and access to phones and photocopiers! The library is good and it is relatively easy to get access to books you need, journals are plentiful and online access makes chasing up articles that much easier. The first thing that hits you is how much is going on in the Institute, with organised conferences, presentations and workshops to which you are invited and which mean you are quickly able to put faces to names. The training courses provide interesting sessions and invaluable contact with other researchers and students across the University. Life is very hectic and it is hard work, but it's stimulating and interesting."
Susan Morón-García (PhD student)

Amal Gouda

"My dream came true when I had the opportunity to have a studentship from the Open University in order to do a PhD. I was an ICT teacher in Egypt and I believe that a teacher should be a lifelong learner. I came to the UK with my husband who was doing his PhD. During this time I took an MSc in e-learning, Multimedia and Consultancy.
I am now in my third year of the PhD. Doing a PhD is not an easy task and this worried me before I started my studies. However, I find that studying with the OU is a great experience. My supervisors are very supportive and helpful and I always feel that U am working in a friendly and encouraging environment."
Amal Gouda (PhD student)

Dr Martin Oliver

"The benefits of studying didn't end with the submission of the thesis. The OU's good reputation has certainly helped me when applying for jobs. Also, the experience gave me insights into Higher Education that have proved invaluable in my current role as a lecturer in Education and Professional Development at University College London (UCL). Perhaps most importantly, though, it introduced me to a group of internationally renowned researchers with whom I still enjoy working with today."
Dr Martin Oliver (1998 PhD graduate)

Dr Kim Issroff

"The Open University gave me much more than a PhD. I had exceptional supervision and a supportive peer group to study with. The research training was excellent, and we were introduced to many of the world's best researchers in the area. But as importantly, I was given role models for being a working woman with children and a career.
I now have an active research career and a family. I try to balance my life based on my experiences of women at the Open University."
Dr Kim Issroff (1996 PhD graduate)

Who will supervise my studies?

When you apply for a PhD studentship, we identify academics in CREET who would be interested in supervising a student in the research area you propose for your studies. If you are interviewed, one or more of those academics would be on your interview panel. Research in CREET covers a wide range of areas, and includes the more computer science end of developing educational technologies, applications of technology in education, research into pedagogical issues underlying the use of technology in education, applied linguistics, aspects of educational leadership, studies of schools and classrooms and the technology of delivering education at a distance.

What if I have questions about the PhD programme that you haven't answered?

No doubt you will have other questions, starting postgraduate research study is a serious commitment and you need to find out all you can as soon as you can. Before you contact us directly, though, you should refer to the 'Frequently Asked Questions' section of this document which covers a range of queries that we know from experience applicants want to check out.

What's the next step?

If you are planning to study for a PhD with CREET then the next step is to prepare and submit an application. Details of the application process can be found in the 'contact/apply' page. However, before you do this you should read CREET's Postgraduate Research Student Handbook Click to Download Research Student Handbook document. This is an important document that provides more detailed information about postgraduate research study within CREET .
