In response to both member and employer requests the ABE is pleased to offer a BSc (Honours) Building Engineering Award available to both Associate and Corporate members of the Association of Building Engineers. The Award has been developed to meet the quality assurance agency's subject benchmark for graduates in Building and Surveying. Members will have the opportunity to gain knowledge on the learning outcomes for building engineers as defined by the Construction Industry Board (CIB) Educational Framework. The award is validated by Sheffield Hallam University.


Requirements

For the Programme, Applicants are required to be:

· ABE members at Associate or Corporate level and with a Higher National Diploma or Higher National Certificate level qualification. Note: · Mature students who do not hold these qualifications must hold full membership of the association and demonstrate the necessary experience to achieve the award. · Applicants for whom English is a foreign language must demonstrate appropriate levels of English language competence.

ABE & Sheffield Hallam University

The BSc (Hons) Building Engineering degree has been developed in conjunction with the Professor of Building Engineering Paul Watson and his team at Sheffield Hallam University. The programme enables ABE members, at both associate and corporate levels to: · Achieve an honours level degree · Allow associates to progress to full ABE membership · Develop and maintain required levels of CPD The course leader for each programme, Neil Hanney leads a team to tutors to deliver the course modules at the ABE Headquarters in Northampton and Telford College, Edinburgh. The Association of Building Engineers is responsible for the hosting and delivery of the programme.

What?

BSc (Honours) Building Engineering

The course has been carefully designed to give ABE members the opportunity to study and complete a BSc Hons in 18 months. The programme of study of seven modules is delivered over three semesters on a part time block delivery. Attendance is on three different occasions during each semester. Tutors are responsible for the delivery and assessment of the modules. The course comprises of 5 Mandatory and 2 Optional modules. Assignments on the course include: · Oral presentations and interviews · Written assignments--essays, reports and portfolios · Tests and practical work

For admission to the programme, applicants are required to be:

ABE members and hold an HND or NHC or equivalent qualification. Mature students who do not hold these qualifications must hold full membership of the Association and complete a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates they have the necessary skills and experience to achieve the award. This portfolio must be assessed and approved by Sheffield Hallam University before the candidate is admitted to the course.

Where?

ABE Headquarters, Northampton & Telford College, Edinburgh

Delivery of lectures, tutorials and seminars is offered on a part-time basis. Delivery takes place on Fridays (all day including evening) and Saturday mornings.

When?

The dates for the award programme will be as the booking form. The course will consist of three semesters at different times throughout the academic programme.

Semester Two begins in February 2007
1. Fire Studies (O 10) 2. Management Health & Safety at Work (M 20) 3. Appraisal & Management of Building (O 10) 4. Environmental Engineering (O 10)

Semester Three begins in September 2007 (England) and October 2007 (Scotland)
1. Project & Site Management (M 20) 2. Environmental Engineering (O 10) 3. Advanced Building Control (O 10) 4. Fire Studies (O 10) Course tutor will set assessment dates in line with the course study plan. Module details are available on request. *M--Mandatory *O- Optional (2 required)
